One key person who significantly contributed to skateboarding history was the legendary photographer Hugh Holland. His images, often bathing in California sunshine, offer a unique glimpse into the early days of 1970s skateboarding.
Hugh's artwork and artistry have always had an impact on me. I vividly recall reading Skateboarder magazine and building my own vert ramps in my parents' garden, directly inspired by his work.
I had the privilege of hanging out with Hugh in Venice Beach in 2024, and our artistic connection was immediate. Before his passing, he shared some of his extensive 30,000-image archive. A large part of this collection revealed a deeper, more intimate facet of his creative essence, showcasing a vulnerability and eroticism I had not previously witnessed in his public work.
This unique archive also offers a historical capture of the foundational Pride events in San Francisco and Los Angeles during the 1970s. This movement, which started with the Stonewall Uprising in West Village, NYC, in the early hours of June 28, 1969, marks one of the most significant social turning points in modern history.
The perfume June 28 by 19-69 is a celebration of the time, place, and spirit in which a particular kind of Pride was born.
19-69 is deeply honored to partner with the Hugh Holland Trust in preserving and promoting the legacy of Hugh Holland´s work.
